Avery NixonMy fascination with birth began as a curious young child growing up in rural Alberta. Every spring our cattle would have their babies and seeing this instilled in me that birth is a natural, normal process. Although the fascination only grew from there, it took some time for midwifery to find me.

After finishing a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at Dalhousie University in Halifax, I had a period of uncertainty about where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. One fateful day I was listening to the radio and a story about the new MRU midwifery program came on. That was my light bulb moment. I started reading about midwifery, and the rest is history.

My journey through the MRU midwifery program challenged me like I have never been challenged before, but the rewards have been great. I feel well equipped to provide safe, evidence-based, meaningful care.

I could not have imagined a better path for myself. I am still fascinated with birth and amazed by the power and strength of women as they journey into motherhood. It is a privilege to provide support as little ones are welcomed into the world and I look forward to helping Calgary families through these important transitions.

When I’m not working, you will find me spending time with family and friends, hiking, knitting, or making soap.
