Hilary Field - Midwife

Being from England my cultural belief and experience comes from the knowledge that all women have access to a midwife, however the continuity of care suffers. I am now looking forward to joining the Calgary Midwives Collective with over 30 years experience as a midwife.  Having trained as a registered nurse and registered sick children’s nurse in 1981 I completed my Midwifery training in 1983 in the United Kingdom. Through the years I became passionate about offering choice and encouraging women to have true confidence in their ability to birth naturally. I further developed my skills through professional training in three complementary therapies and chose to train as a Reflexologist in 1995, a Bach Flower remedy therapist in 1998 and Clinical Hypnotherapist in 2003; I have lectured extensively to both professional and client groups on use of these therapies for self help and how they might be applied throughout pregnancy, birth and post-partum. I specialize in treating birth trauma using EMDR and clinical hypnosis, helping to heal psychological trauma so that subsequent pregnancies and birth can be appreciated. The therapies I practice are highly beneficial in developing self belief and in promoting confidence in the body’s natural capability to birth. In early 2012 I completed my degree in Midwifery specialist practice at the University of the West of England (Bristol); having written my research based dissertation on ‘confidence to birth’. My professional experience has encompassed many skills over the years; I am trained in the UNICEF baby friendly initiative, hypnosis for birth, and have a passion for parenthood education; empowering women to make sound informed choice. I have taught Obstetric emergency drills to other midwives and take every opportunity to inform healthcare professionals of the benefits of Midwifery care for women and their families. I look forward to providing these skills within the practice.
